How do I tag a store? Do I have to sign-up to do it?

Here's a link to our short instructional video on how to use Facebook Messenger to tag a store. No sign-up with Generation 180 is required. We’d love for you to signup with Generation 180 below to keep up with the progress of the Keep It Cool Campaign.

What’s Facebook Messenger? Where do I find it?

Facebook Messenger is an instant messaging application. Our store-tagging mechanism lives within Facebook Messenger, so that’s the only app you need. The Messenger app is available on the App Store or Google Play, even if you are not on Facebook. Please note that you can only tag a store using Messenger through mobile, you cannot with a desktop computer.

What if I don’t have a Facebook account?

The Facebook Messenger app is available to both Facebook and non-Facebook users. In order to use Messenger without Facebook, download Facebook Messenger in your app store, open the app, select the “Not on Facebook” option, and enter your phone number when prompted.

How do I specify the kind of pin I want to drop (i.e. door closed vs. door open)?

When you send a store location through Facebook Messenger to Generation 180, the app will interact with you to determine if the store’s door is open or closed. Our system will make sure the right type of pin is being dropped depending on your answers.

I just tagged a store, where is the pin on the map?

The campaign map displays all pins and is available here. Pins indicating a closed door will appear on the map within 24 hours and pins indicating open doors will appear after we have interacted with the retailer (up to 5 days).

Who should I contact if I’m having trouble dropping a pin?

If you’re experiencing technical difficulties, a good place to start is this short video that walks you through the process of tagging a store on Facebook Messenger. If you are still having challenges, write us at

How will Generation 180 contact retailers?

After you tag a store on Facebook Messenger, our system will automatically contact the retailer and either recognize them for keeping their door closed, or encourage them to “keep it cool” and close their door. Please note that you will remain completely anonymous to the retailer.

How do I know if a business is participating in Keep It Cool?

On the campaign map, blue pins indicate that the business is a Keep It Cool participant and they’ve committed to conserve energy by keeping their doors closed. Green pins indicate that the retailer has been recognized for their energy conscious behavior, but they have not yet officially committed to participating.

Participating retailers can also place official Keep It Cool decals on their store doors or windows to indicate their support of the campaign.

I’m a retailer, how can I get involved?

First things first, lead by example by keeping your door closed and encouraging other stores around you to do the same. If you would like to get involved further, you can sign up here, and we will be in touch with you promptly!

I’m part of an organization, how can we get involved?

We’d love to have you help promote the Keep It Cool campaign. A great way to spread the word is to visit our Keep It Cool Promotional Page. You can find sample social posts, newsletter templates, and a ton more promotional assets to use.
